About Us:

The Perioperative Department at Valley Children’s is a robust division, incorporating many procedural areas and their associated support services. Periop supports every service line within a healthcare system providing care to patients within the Central Valley and its surrounding areas, collaborating with outlying facilities to accomplish the mission of the organization to provide the best care to our patients, always. The Pediatric Endoscopy Unit is a small procedural unit that performs endoscopic procedure Monday thru Friday. The registered nurse works closely with the Gastroenterology (GI) provider and Pulmonologist throughout the day. General Anesthesia is provided for all endoscopy procedures. In most instances, one room is open daily with a second team on site to perform concurrent procedures when needed. The RN learns bedside procedures, primarily bronchoscopy for the patient in the PICU/NICU always working alongside their provider. There is one circulating nurse and a scrub assigned in the room for each case. The case load for endoscopy scheduling is normally 8 to 14 cases daily. Many procedures are EGD w/biopsy and colonoscopy. The team also enters the operating room arena when assisting on multiple procedure bookings. The endoscopy nurse team aligns with day surgery and supports unit work in that area when the need arises. Outside of normally scheduled shifts, call hours are assigned to all nurses in the unit.
